2020 Mazda CX-30 vs. 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer

The fast-growing compact SUV market segment is full of new options. But just like other trends in automotive history, it’s rare that a vehicle strikes a unique balance of value, quality and performance. The 2020 Mazda CX-30 is that vehicle. After collecting awards such as the 2020 Top Safety Pick by the IIHS and with a low starting MSRP, it sets the bar.

It is also important to compare the CX-30 to emerging competition to help illustrate its value. Here, we place it head-to-head with the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer.

The 2020 Mazda CX-30 features segment-best power

Compact SUVs don’t require much power to handle most everyday driving, but Mazda engineers didn’t want the CX-30 to be ordinary. The lineup offers two powertrains. The entry GX trim features a 2.0L four-cylinder that outputs 155 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque.

Performance increases in the GS and GT trims with a 2.5L four-cylinder that generates 186 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. Both engines pair with an automatic six-speed transmission that offers drives a personalized driving experience with manual mode and a drive selection switch. The GT model even adds paddle shifters.

The Trailblazer offers two engine options. FWD trims include a turbocharged three-cylinder that produces 137 horsepower and 166 lb-ft of torque. Since every bit of horsepower counts in a compact SUV, the Trailblazer’s entry engine falls short. Even with slightly more torque than the CX-30’s entry engine, the Trailblazer’s CVT transmission doesn’t make up for the personalized feeling of the CX-30’s manual mode.

The second Trailblazer engine is a 1.3L three-cylinder that reaches 155 horsepower. This is not even close to the CX-30’s 2.5L with 186 horsepower. Although the 1.3L pairs with a nine-speed transmission, it also doesn’t have the personalized driving experience of the CX-30.

The 2020 Mazda CX-30 masters efficiency and value

The CX-30 beats the Trailblazer in efficiency, too. The Trailblazer has a fuel consumption rating as low as 8.9/7.8 L/100 km, but the CX-30 takes it further to 8.9/7.1 L/100 km

The CX-30 also offers equipment not found on the Trailblazer, including: Brake Assist, heated steering wheel, multi-zone air conditioning, mirror memory, rain-sensing wipers, integrated turn signal mirrors, seat memory and more.
