2021 Mazda CX-30 vs. 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross : The CX-30 Takes the Lead

Small crossovers are growing in popularity. But many members of the segment are bland and uninspiring. Driving dynamics and performance have always been key pillars of the Mazda brand, and the CX-30 encompasses the Mazda philosophy by offering great power and handling capabilities, technology, style and reliability. The CX-30 is also very roomy and can take you anywhere you want to go.

Here, we compare the Mazda CX-30 with the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross.

Performance is at the centre of the 2021 Mazda CX-30

The CX-30 gives buyers a great choice of performance levels. The base CX-30 engine is a four-cylinder 2.0-litre unit that develops 155 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque. Next, the GS and GT models get a more powerful 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 186 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque. For those who enjoy more performance and accelerations, the four-cylinder 2.5-litre turbocharged engine is available in the CX-30 and outputs up to 250 hp along with 320 lb-ft of torque – this is unprecedented in the segment.

All three engines are mated to a sporty six-speed automatic transmission, which can be fitted with the i-Activ AWD system, an essential component if you’re planning on tackling Canada’s worst in terms of weather conditions.

Even if the new Toyota Corolla Cross has been highly anticipated, it already disappoints in terms of performance. All models come with a four cylinder 2.0-litre engine rated at 169 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque. This is very similar to the CX-30’s base engine in terms of output, but it is way below all the other options you get with the CX-30.

Toyota gave the Corolla Cross a continuously variable transmission, a unit which provides much less enjoyment and response compared to the sporty six-speed from Mazda.

More refinement, comfort and technologies inside the 2021 Mazda CX-30

Inside, the CX-30 uses everything we know and love about Mazda, from upscale materials to refined textures that surround the driver and passengers with ultimate comfort, to the highly intuitive infotainment system that includes all the best features. The Toyota Corolla Cross, on the other hand, is assembled using hard plastics and budget-oriented materials, which can have an adverse impact on your driving experience.
