2021 Mazda CX-9 vs. 2021 Honda Pilot: Discover More Value, Performance, and Safety

The CX-9 moves forward in 2021 with sophisticated styling, a premium driving experience, and even more amenities. Six exciting models feature standard AWD and enhanced safety that help you drive with confidence. These features and more create a special place for the CX-9 in the segment. To help illustrate, we compare the 2021 Mazda CX-9 to the 2021 Honda Pilot.

The 2021 Mazda CX-9 makes refinement affordable

The CX-9 is a much more refined SUV than the Pilot. The exterior design, but also the materials and textures that have been put together to craft the interior give the CX-9 a much more luxurious and comfortable feel than in the Honda Pilot. But owners also get a lot more for this particular price range.

The base CX-9 GS has an MSRP of $40,000 and includes outstanding amenities such as G-Vectoring Control Plus, AWD, heated front seats, 3-zone climate control, and much more. The base LX Pilot starts around $43,000, and is more basic.

The top-grade CX-9 100th Anniversary Edition offers maximum amenities with a starting MSRP of $53,350. However, the Pilot's top model is less accessible at $58,161.

The 2021 Mazda CX-9 evolves your driving

One engine is all the CX-9 needs. Each model features a turbocharged 2.5-litre that generates up to 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. The drivetrain also offers an opportunity for all owners to create a more personalized experience with manual shift mode, a drive selection switch, and paddle shifters (most models).

The Pilot also offers a single engine—a 3.5-litre, six-cylinder that produces up to 280 horsepower, but its torque output is nearly 60 lb-ft less than the CX-9. This becomes a factor when responsiveness is a must, but also when taking full advantage of the CX-9 superior driving dynamics. Despite the incredible torque, the CX-9 is also more fuel efficient on the highway.

The CX-9 is designed to be agile and fun, but it also earns outstanding safety ratings. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety designates the CX-9 as a Top Safety Pick+, its highest rating. Recognized for crashworthiness, crash avoidance, and crash mitigation.
