All-New Mazda CX-90 Models Earn Coveted 2023 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ Rating
September 15 2023,
In a recent announcement by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2024 Mazda CX-90 Mild Hybrid Inline 6 Turbo (MHEV) and CX-90 Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) have been bestowed with the 2023 TOP SAFETY PICK+. This prestigious rating is the highest offered by the IIHS and attests to the vehicles' superior safety features.
The IIHS lauded Mazda's ongoing dedication to safety, particularly given that the institute's requirements for the award became more stringent in 2023. According to IIHS President David Harkey, the CX-90 models are a demonstration of how Mazda has successfully met these more rigorous standards.
Mazda Canada Inc.'s President and CEO, David Klan, emphasized the brand's unwavering focus on safety, stating that it remains a crucial factor influencing customer purchase decisions. He also commended the IIHS for their role in constantly raising the safety benchmarks for the automotive industry as a whole.
To be eligible for the 2023 TOP SAFETY PICK+, a vehicle has to fulfill specific criteria. These include earning 'good' ratings in several key areas of safety evaluation: driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, original moderate overlap front, and updated side tests. Additionally, the car must have standard headlights that are rated as 'acceptable' or 'good.' An advanced or superior front crash prevention system, which performs well in both daytime and nighttime conditions, must also be available.
It's worth noting that other Mazda models like the Mazda3, Mazda3 Sport, and CX-30 secured the 2023 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK when equipped with optional front crash prevention technology. The CX-5 and CX-50 also managed to grab the 2023 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK recognition, but with standard equipment.
In sum, the award serves as yet another validation of Mazda’s commitment to ensuring road safety, not just for its own customers but for all road users.
