Three things to know about Mazda's revised electrification strategy
December 06 2022,
Mazda provide an update to its electrification strategy a few weeks ago, and there’s a lot to cover. After the introduction of the fully electric Mazda MX-30 this year, Mazda is planning to bring more electrified models to the market in 2023 and a full range of new hybrid and fully electric models by 2025 with the ultimate goal of offering only electrified vehicles by 2030. Here are three things to know about the updated Mazda electrification strategy.
The new 2024 CX-70 and CX-90 PHEV models coming next year
The new Mazda CX-70 and CX-90 sport utility vehicles will be launched in 2023. They will feature a new plug-in hybrid powertrain and will be the first Mazda plug-in hybrid models to arrive in North America. We don't have all of the details on this updated engine, but we expect it to offer around 50 km of range which is what Mazda PHEV models in Europe offer.
There will be a new Mazda CX-50 Hybrid
Mazda also confirmed the introduction of a new Mazda CX-50 Hybrid. Once again, we don't have all of the details on this new hybrid powertrain but we expect it to offer the same level of performance as the current CX-50 and its impressive turbocharged engine, and we also expect better fuel economy.
Mazda also confirmed that it will launch a new mild hybrid powertrain that will use a 48 V battery to provide better fuel economy with a boost in performance. Moreover, four Mazda models featuring the light hybrid or a fully hybrid engine will be introduced by 2025.
There will be a new SKYACTIV EV platform and a new electric SUV
Mazda will be introducing a new SKYACTIV EV platform by 2025. This new electric vehicle dedicated platform will serve as the base for a new fully electric sport utility vehicle. This new fully electric SUV will join the current Mazda MX-30 full EV from Mazda. Last but not least, Mazda confirmed that the MX-30 would go on sale across Canada next year. It had previously been limited to just British Columbia and Quebec.
