What we know about the upcoming Mazda CX-70
August 04 2022,
With the popularity of crossovers and SUVs showing no sign of waning even during production and supply shortages, Mazda is continuing to expand its stake in the segment for 2023 and beyond with the new CX-70.
The latest in Mazda’s line-up will likely slot between the CX-50 (or recently-revealed CX-60) and the CX-9 in the line-up, meaning it will probably be a two-row crossover with more rugged looks than the CX-9, similar to the treatment given to the CX-50 when compared to the CX-5.
Right now, the most used engine in Mazda’s line-up is a 2,5-litre four-cylinder, though a turbocharged version of that engine is gaining in popularity after arriving in the engine bays of the CX-5 and CX-50. In those vehicles, it makes 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque but as good as that all is, it’s getting a little old-school in this day of mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains.
In that light, expect Mazda to turn to the powertrain they’ve announced for the CX-60, which they’re calling “e-Skyactiv” and is a plug-in hybrid offering making in the neighbourhood of 325 hp and 370 lb-ft. We’re talking some serious numbers here that should have the CX-70 going toe-to-tow with the most advanced and powerful vehicles in the segment.
Inside, expect to find top trims adorned with Nappa leather and real wood trim and as is the Mazda way, a sleek dashboard and gauge cluster as well as the latest from Mazda in terms of infotainment, likely a widescreen display measuring over 10”, if the CX-50 is any indication.
The real question is where the CX-70 will fit in the line-up once the CX-60 arrives. Likely, the CX-60 will take the form of a four-door adventure coupe seen elsewhere in the industry and the CX-70 will be a more traditional “wagon” body style with the flared fenders and chunky styling of the CX-50.
